The Buick Skylark is one of the most recognizable automotive models in the Buick lineup. It began as a luxury convertible in 1953 and was powered by a 322 cu in (5.3 L) V8 engine. Later, it made a comeback in 1961 as the Buick Special compact's high-end model, featuring a more conventional compact car design. The third generation switched to an intermediate A-body platform that the Oldsmobile Cutlass and Pontiac Tempest shared. This generation came in two-door, four-door, and convertible body styles, and it had a more robust, sporting appearance. The Gran Sport (GS) variant came with a powerful V8 engine.

The Skylark adopted the muscle car culture with its fourth-generation models, which included more aggressive designs and potent engine options. Models like the GS 400 and later the GS 455 offered significant performance enhancements, including high-output V8 engines. The fifth generation returned to the compact car market with two-door and four-door traditional small car styles. The Skylark was converted into a front-wheel-drive compact car during the sixth generation, which was built on the GM X-body front-wheel-drive platform. The seventh generation continued its evolution on the N-body platform, featuring smoother, more aerodynamic styling and engine options including fuel-efficient, four-cylinder, and V6 engines.
